Summary

Florine Marchand is currently conducting a PhD thesis entitled “L’industrie lithique de Tell ‘Arqa à l’âge du Bronze (Plaine du Akkar, Liban Nord)” under the supervision of L. Colonna d’Istria (ULiège, UR Mondes anciens) and V. Rots (ULiège, TraceoLab/UR Art, Archéologie, Patrimoine). Her research aims to understand the socio-economic status of the historical lithic industries by combining a techno-functional approach and knapping technique experimentations. To that end, she studies the Tell ‘Arqa flint assemblages, one of the only archaeological sites of the Levantine coast that shows a complete stratigraphy for the Bronze Age period with dwelling units (3100-1200 cal. B.C.). Several raw materials were identified showing a locally knapped industry as well as imported large blade products, attesting to both production and consumption habits. The evolution of tool typology is also defined for the first time for a complete Bronze Age sequence. Most of the analyzed tools were used hafted as sickle elements (no tribulum elements were identified), but some were surprisingly also used for common day-life activities. The presence of exogeneous large blades inside the collection led her to test pressure systems such as the lever and to explain the complexity of the pressure technique. The results obtained on the Tell ‘Arqa lithic industry show that stone tools need to be taken in consideration as an important aspect of the material culture of an historical site.
